A 59-year-old single mother from Scarborough was laid off in February 2008 but now she will not bother to find a new job.

Beverly Palmer was all smiles yesterday when she picked up the $25 million cheque for winning last Wednesday’s Lotto 6/49 jackpot.

“I do not choose the number, the number chose me,” Ontario’s newest multi-millionaire said told reporters at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) office when asked about her gaming strategy.

But her love of sunshine may have helped the Jamaican-born Canadian, who immigrated to Canada 38 years ago. Since the weather forecast predicted a wet day for Wednesday, she bought a quick pick ticket on Tuesday at Shopper’s Drug Mart on Rylander Blvd. in Scarborough.  She did not check her ticket until last Sunday at a self-scanner.

She called her brother and they rechecked the number.
