They pay the same tuition, study together and compete for the same grades.

But despite their accomplishments, women MBA graduates are lagging behind their male counterparts because of hiring practices at major corporations around the world.

In fact, according to a paper released today entitled Pipeline’s Broken Promise, research group Catalyst says that women MBA graduates not only start at lower positions than men with an equivalent education, but they also earn about $4,600 less a year in starting positions. That early gap translates into women rising at slower rates and to lower positions throughout their careers, the study found.

“To find that women who are leaving the leading business schools in the world, that they lag at every stage of their career and salary and don’t catch up to their male counterparts is really quite stunning,” said Deborah Gillis, vice-president, North America, Catalyst.

The findings came from more than 4,100 alumni from 26 top business schools around the world who graduated from full-time MBA programs between 1996 and 2007 and were working full-time in companies and firms when the study was conducted. Roughly 25 per cent were women.

While 16 per cent of respondents were Canadian, the study did not show how Canada stacked up against the rest of the world.
