She’s the daughter of one of Canada’s top filmmakers, so it’s no surprise photographer Caitlin Cronenberg eventually found her niche behind a camera.
So photographer, huh. You couldn’t just rebel and become a dairy farmer or something?
I was planning on rebelling my entire life when I thought I was going to be Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat … Until I got a sewing machine, and then thought I would be some sort of seamstress. And then I got a camera and it all started to make sense. So I tried to rebel, but it just didn’t really take.
What’s your favourite subject?
Anything that has a person in it. I like taking pictures of cake as well, because I can get emotion out of a cake — especially if I made the cake myself. We have a bond. A cake bond.
How do you get emotion out of a cake?!
How do you not get emotion out a cake (laughs)! It’s just the most emotionally deep and rich subject. It’s got icing, and you can add some fruit, some ganache ... It’s a sensual subject.
Let’s talk about your book. Why a collection of naked folks?
Basically, because I’d never done it before. (When I started) I experienced this intense connection with the person I was shooting and it just became really interesting to me. Each photo was telling an individual story.
Most women have panic attacks at the mere idea of trying on a bikini. How did you get so many to pose in the buff?
In a way it’s different than trying on a bikini. It’s a more comfortable experience because you know that you’re in a safe place and in good hands. I feel like they knew they could be comfortable and I wasn’t going to judge or ridicule them in any way.
Any tips for taking Cronenberg-style photos?
Always make your own blood from scratch. Don’t use store-bought blood. Corn syrup and a little instant coffee, red food colouring and a touch of blue. And, you know, stir well. Plus it’s edible.
Hey, you can even put it on the cake.
Well, you don’t want to eat too much of it because it’s very sweet. And the coffee doesn’t taste too great either.
