Venezuelan food - now that’s not something you can get on every corner.

So thank goodness for Arepa Café. They’ve brought the city arepas: corn meal bread that’s grilled and filled like a sandwich which has the most amazing texture - like the outside of an English muffin, and yet, it's surprisingly light. The choices of stuffings range from vegetarian to full-on meat.

We try the Reina Pepiada-The Curvy Queen ($7.50) with chicken, avocado, red onion and coriander all blended into a creamy, luscious concoction, and the Carne Mechada ($7.00) that boasts moist shredded flank steak, tomato, garlic pepper and cumin. Both come with a tiny container of fresh coleslaw. We can’t stop moaning over the genius of these “sandwiches,” their flavours, the textures.

We finish with an Alfajor ($2), a dulce de leche sandwich cookie that is perfection. If only there was an Arepa Café on every corner.
