Chardonnay in its purest for, is fairly neutral –- it's the oak barrel treatment which turns it into a glamour wine. And it drives the price up.
The public's interest in the non-oaked style seems to be an extension of the current fondness for Pinot Grigio -– another fairly neutral white. There is not a lot of difference between today's big selling editions of both wines. Both fit the bill for everyday drinking –- house wines to have with light meals and for social sipping. Wines in the easy, comfortable category.
The Macon region in France is home to light, fresh editions of Chardonnay and I urge you to check it out. But in our stores, the current leader in non-oaked Chard comes from Ontario. After all, we are the home of all things neutral and moderate.
For value, start with Inniskillin 06 Chardonnay 'Varietal Series' – lively, lovely everyday wine – or the light, refreshing Pelee Island.
One of the best kept secrets in local wine is Vineland's Chardonnay – a smooth operator with an everyday touch. Henry of Pelham have always done well in this category in a simple-but-smart style similar to Vineland.
Another local star is Wayne Gretzky unoaked Chardonnay –- as likeable as the guy himself. And if your fondness is for quite dry and refreshing, try the Peninsula Ridge.
Hope to see some of you at the Gourmet Food & Wine Expo this weekend at the Metro Convention Centre. And Billy's Best Bottles Wines for 2009 is hot off the press! In stores now, or order multiple copies from www.billysbestbottles.com and save.
