Rachael Ray eats on $40 a day. Courtney Scott tried it for $0.
The slim 27-year-old said she spent last week living off the fat of the urban landscape: Free samples from gourmet groceries and farmers markets.
“These are trying times,” said the marketing consultant, who had the idea while munching free animal crackers at the Union Square Whole Foods with an unemployed friend.
“A whole segment of New Yorkers are probably pinching pennies for the first time,” she said.
She recorded on her blog — A Broad’r View — her days chasing down brownies at Chelsea Market, tomato bruschetta in the Garden of Eden, and sopressata at Faicco’s Pork Store.
“There are drawbacks,” Scott said. “It’s pretty anti-social. New Yorkers have a culture of, ‘Let’s meet for a drink or food.’”
She cheated with wine. “I’m a bit of a wino,” she admitted. But at West Village bistro, Dell’anima, she scored free olives, braised fennel, and chickpeas with her $13 happy hour glass of Sicilian Nero d’Avola.
“It’s more of a mainstream freeganism,” she said.
