Do you have unwanted facial hair? Do you dread depilatory discomfort? Do you prefer wax candles lighting a romantic dinner for two rather than wax strips ripping hair from your sensitive skin?

Canadians are discovering another method of hair removal that has ancient roots. Known as khite in Arabic and fatlah in Egyptian, threading has reached Canada's multicultural neighbourhoods, where practitioners of the ancient art provide inexpensive and gentle facial hair removal. The technique has become so popular that many salons and spas are adding threading to their list of services.

The process of threading involves the gentle and precise twisting of a length of cotton thread along the hairs to be removed, which traps the hair and lifts it out of the follicle by its root.

Threading can be used to remove hair on the entire face, including upper lip, chin, eyebrows, sideburns, and cheeks — with results lasting up to two to four weeks.

Skin redness, inflammation, and secondary pigment changes may occur. Choose a salon where threaders use both hands to hold the thread.
