Michelle Gibson, a large Canon camera hanging from her neck, accosts a passerby at Eglinton and Oakwood avenues on a recent muggy day.
“Would you like to have your photo taken — for free?” she asks.
Others ducked and avoided eye contact when the friendly Gibson posed the question, thinking it must be a skit or prank for TV. But Rieshelle Anthony, with her three-week-old baby Shervin in a stroller, stopped and listened.
“We want to photograph the diverse faces of Toronto,” explained Gibson It was a good start for Gibson and her photographer friend, John Beebe, who started the Diversity Project this summer.
They aim to take portraits of people in different neighbourhoods across the city in preparation for a future exhibition.
The duo are showing their work in progress on their website at beingtoronto.blogspot.com.
Their next stops were scheduled to be the Riverdale and Leslieville neighbourhoods.

Toronto photographers John Beebe and Michelle Gibson are starting a project to capture faces of Toronto. They set up a portable studio and ask passersby to have their portraits taken.
