A 57-year-old man trying to cross a busy Toronto intersection (Broadview Avenue at Danforth Avenue) is dead after being struck by a dump truck today.

It's the latest in a rash of pedestrian fatalities in the Toronto area -about a dozen over the last 10 days.

Reports from the scene suggest the man may have been on crutches when he was hit at about 11:30 a.m.

Sgt. Tim Burrows of Toronto police told CTV that the man was walking eastbound on the south side of Danforth when he was struck by a dump truck making a right-hand turn.

Burrows says it's not known if the man was crossing on a walk light. He says the dump truck driver did stop.

Some streetcar service has been suspended in the area due to the police investigation and shuttle buses are running instead.

Earlier today, a vehicle struck a woman in the north end of the city (on the ramp to the southbound Allen Expressway at Lawrence Avenue.)

Paramedics took the woman, estimated to be in her 30s, to a hospital. She is believed to have serious head injuries.
