Album: The Land is Wild
Label: Pheromone
Rating: ***
Dave Bidini isn’t going to have much trouble leaving behind his 30-year association with the Canadian indie institution, The Rheostatics. He’s already proved his clever writing abilities with seven well-received books about hockey, Italian baseball and rock ’n’ roll. Besides, his first solo release isn’t far removed from the witty Canadiana The Rheos were renowned for producing. Especially noteworthy is the title track, The Land is Wild, which follows Bidini’s already established tradition of writing great hockey songs (The Ballad of Wendel Clark). This time his theme turns tragic, though as he focuses on the life of Bryan Fogarty, a gifted junior player who burned out in an avalanche of booze and drugs. Yet, it’s Bidini’s wry humour that dominates this album.
