Essentially School Of Rock for girls, Drew Barrymore’s affable directorial debut features a less-mannered-than-usual Ellen Page as a small-town Texas girl whose path to self-actualization is actually a roller-derby track.

Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis and Barrymore contribute vivid, funny turns as veteran skater girls, and while the plot mechanics are creaky, they work — lubricated by a hipster-friendly soundtrack that peaks with the use of Jens Lekman’s ecstatic Your Arms Around Me.
