Vancouver’s mayor-elect Gregor Robertson will be sworn in as the city’s new civic leader today, officially ending Sam Sullivan’s three-year term.
In his first media address after his November election, the Happy Planet founder — who’s known to cycle to press conferences — promised immediate changes at city hall.
Robertson vowed to make the fight against homelessness his priority immediately after taking office, vowing to put together a special task force this week in his bid to end homelessness in Vancouver by 2015.
One short-term, low-cost solution he’s suggested is using vacant land owned by the city and converting it to emergency housing.
During his campaign, Robertson also promised to hold a public meeting within the next month to expose the details of the $100-million Olympic Village loan deal.
He’s also suggested axing Sam Sullivan’s Downtown Ambassador’s Program — which provides hospitality assistance and crime prevention services downtown — and Project Civil City.
