The 31st annual Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival launched a few days ago with a grand ol' party at Earls on Hornby, and featuring the latest Discovery Series VQA releases from Inniskillin Wines.
Out of the five wines we tasted, I fell in love with one - the Tempranillo Icewine. No, you didn't hear wrong, I said Tempranillo icewine. Forget your Pinot Noirs, Muscats, Sauternes, etc. Yes, it's a Spanish grape that is best know for making full-bodied, ruby-red wines that smack of berries, plum, tobacco, blah, blah. But the plain fact is, this is a grape that makes an absolutely delectable icewine and Inniskillin winemaker Sandor Mayor is a genius for thinking of it.
