Leo’s big day

May 27, 2008 11:55 a.m.
       Text size

I remember 10 years ago when the very first Leo Awards ceremony was held. It was the first time in British Columbia that local actors, writers, producers and techs were honoured so sincerely, and so glamorously by their peers in an Academy Awards-style celebration. A decade later, and the tradition continues stronger than ever thanks to two very special men — producers Walter Daroshin and Sonny Wong — who will be among the first to tell you that achieving this milestone has been no easy task. Their tireless commitment and dedication to the industry is unparalleled. More than 7,300 entries have been submitted over the years — a number that in and of itself is a testament to the depth of talent we produce in this province. To you Sonny and Walter, I say a personal thank you for bringing both Hollywood status and Oscar-style glamour to our town. It was an honour to be there in the very beginning, and it was an honour to be there again this year to take part in the anniversary celebration of a lifetime.

Leo presenter Britt Irvin, who can be seen in Normal and fellow actress Cindy Busby add extra glam to the red carpet reception.

Camille Sullivan takes home the Leo for Best Lead Performance by a Female in a Feature Length Drama for her work in Normal.

Best Feature Length Drama award winner Blake Corbet, seen here at the reception with daughter Karen, is honoured for his work on Elijah.

Colin Cunningham, who has starred with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a double Leo Award winner this night for Best Direction in a Short Drama and Best Performance by a Male in a Short Drama.

Tyler Labine is all smiles as he escorts his wife Carrie and mom Karen on the red carpet before taking home the Leo for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series for his work on Reaper.
