Metro is once again the fastest-growing daily local newspaper in Vancouver.
With 143,900 readers doing it daily and 349,900 weekly, Metro’s upswing continued in key demographics, according to the 07/08 study released yesterday by the Newspaper Audience Databank (NADbank).
While Metro surged, the local paid dailies lost readers when compared to the interim NADbank 06/07 data released in September of 2007.
• Metro Vancouver daily readership increased by 15 per cent.
• 24 hours daily readership increased by eight per cent.
• The Vancouver Sun lost 10 per cent of its daily readers.
• The Province lost six per cent of its daily readers.
Maryse Lalonde, Metro Vancouver publisher, said she’s thrilled to see this kind of year-over-year growth.
“Our goal has been to become a staple in young urbanites’ lives, so these results validate the choices we’ve made in how we reach them and what content is relevant to them,” Lalonde said.
“With ongoing distribution and product development strategies in place, combined with the re-launch of our web site earlier this spring, we’re confident we’ll continue to play an essential role in people’s daily lives for months and years to come.”
Across Canada, Metro now reaches 1,091,800 readers every weekday, and 2,253,200 readers weekly in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
That’s a 26 per cent increase over NADbank’s 2006-07 numbers — or 223,600 more weekday Metro readers.
Metro Canada launched Metro Halifax in February. Readership results for Metro’s coast-to-coast coverage will be available in March.
