Shopping in Seattle is about to get easier.
The province is now accepting applications for a new driver’s licence that allows British Columbians to cross into the United States.
B.C.’s Enhanced Driver’s Licence (EDL) will allow the cardholder to cross at land or water ports of entry with a single piece of identification.
People who don’t drive — and youth over age 12 — are being offered the option of applying for an Enhanced Identification Card (EIC).
"Through our efforts, the U.S. Government now recognizes that enhanced driver's licences and enhanced identification cards can serve as an acceptable and secure alternative to passports at U.S. land and water border crossings,” said Peter Van Loan, federal Minister of Public Safety.
Monday’s announcement follows a successful test phase launched in January 2008,
with 521 volunteers.
ICBC is now accepting appointment bookings for customers interested in applying for an EDL or EIC, with appointments starting May 1. Both are voluntary and cost $35.
