Graduates bring art to SkyTrain stations

An art project showcasing local artists at Burrard and Waterfront SkyTrain stations was officially opened to the public yesterday.

Between Spaces is meant to foster a sense of community ownership of the SkyTrain system.

The B.C. Rapid Transit Company enlisted six Emily Carr University graduates to be the first artists to decorate the public venues.

“Public art belongs to the community,” Susan Stewart, a dean at the university, said in a release.

SkyTrain field supervisor Michael DeCambra has been a part of the art initiative since its conception. DeCambra said he believes what makes a society survive is a sense of unity, and that is why he has been working to bring in local artists to build community.

“Looking at people’s reactions, yes it does (do the job). People are rushing to go home, but the art slows them down,” DeCambra said.

The artists’ works share themes of community, natural environment and transportation.
