Winds of up to 90 km/h battered southwestern B.C. last night, leaving about 17,000 homes without electricity and cancelling ferry sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.

The outages included more than 5,000 homes in Richmond and Delta and another 2,000 near the University of B.C. Nearly 1,000 homes were in the dark in West Vancouver.

Metro Vancouver officials also said recent heavy rain is likely to make tap water in the region cloudy due to sediments and organic materials washing into reservoirs, but it is safe to drink so far.
