Capt. Trevor Greene, who was severely injured when he was struck in the head by an axe while serving in Afghanistan, will carry the Paralympic torch Saturday in Victoria, cknw.com reports.

Greene, a Vancouver journalist who has written a book about the missing women from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, was serving in Afghanistan in March of 2006.

During a meeting with village elders, Greene, who had taken off his helmet as a sign of respect, was struck from behind with an axe. The attack nearly killed him and left him with a severe brain injury.

A film about his rehabilitation won a Gemini Award for best documentary.
