Vancouver smokers will have one less place to light up if a proposed bylaw prohibiting smoking in all parks and beaches passes tonight.

The Vancouver Parks Board is voting whether to enact the smoking ban, which is already in effect in some form or another in municipalities like Richmond and White Rock.

“The overarching concern here is to promote a healthy urban environment and support active living and wellness,” said Parks Comm. Raj Hundal.

He cited a survey taken last year, which found a large majority of participants favoured some form of smoking ban on beaches, parks and playgrounds. Nearly 50 per cent said they would use the city’s parks more often if they were non-smoking.

Litter is another concern and is a substantial issue on beaches where cigarette butts are buried in the sand and must be picked up manually.

If the ban is passed, a summer-long grace period will be implemented to get the message across to smokers.
