The Vancouver Park Board passed a bylaw last night banning smoking in city beaches, parks and playgrounds.

It takes effect Sept. 1.

Park board commissioner Raj Hundal said the initiative is meant to support healthy living and wellness.

Smokers will have the summer-long grace period until the ban is enforced, but smoker Ty Gibson said the restrictions are getting on his nerves.

“That leaves me with my own apartment,” he said at English Bay.

“I’ll smoke in my closet then, (I’ll) be a closet smoker.”

But smoker Miriam Garcia, originally from Mexico, said she has mixed feelings.

“It’s good because you ... don’t smell of smoke.”
