Fireworks fans are being asked to keep the beach clean and to stay sober to avoid incidents, members of a west-end clean up crew and police said yesterday.

“There may be a correlation between drinking and trash talking,” said Vancouver-West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert.

People who bring drinks are also more likely to leave garbage — usually empties — behind, he added.

Vancouver Police Const. Lindsey Houghton said it’s not worth bringing booze to the beach.

“(If we see drinking) we’ll either ask you to pour it out or we’ll seize it,” Houghton said.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to congregate along the shores of English Bay tonight for the HSBC Celebration of Light.

Const. Houghton added that police will not only be on bikes, horses and motorcycles, but will also have its marine unit establish a presence on the water.
