A separated bike lane along Hornby Street, if approved by council in the fall, will be constructed during Vancouver’s rainy winter months — a time when bicycle trips in the city drop off precipitously.

Jerry Dobrovolny, the city’s director of transportation, said the number of cyclists on Vancouver’s roads depends more on weather than on season, although the two are linked.

“Last year we saw some fantastic weather in February during the Games and we saw a doubling of bike trips,” said Dobrovolny, following a technical briefing yesterday.

“The advantage of building the lane early is that if we have another stretch of good weather, whether it’s January, February or March, we’re ready for it.”

The city held a second open house yesterday on the proposed $2.2-million separated bike lane trial along Hornby Street, complete with the block-by-block plans that were posted on the city’s website last Thursday.

“We’ve been meeting with businesses one-on-one to find out their specific concerns and to adjust the design so we address them.”
