The fastest 250 men and women will qualify for the main event. Qualifying runs in the Whistler mountain bike park go from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, with the main event at 11 a.m. (women) and noon (men) on Sunday.

The Red Bull 5,000 Down is a mass-start mountain bike race from the peak of Whistler Mountain to the village below, dropping about 5,000 feet (or 1,500 metres). Racers will compete for a $12,000 purse, with the top five men and top three women getting cash prizes.

Just how fast are they going?
Racers will hit speeds of 80 km/h as they roar down a fire road at the top of Whistler around Harmony Bowl and into Garbanzo Zone and down through the mountain bike park.
