Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton said yesterday that his party will lobby for an investment of $206 million over four years to improve Vancouver’s public transit system.
Speaking at the Waterfront SkyTrain station, Layton outlined details of his party’s plan to dedicate one cent a litre of the federal gas tax to transit.
“For Vancouver (that) … would mean $100 million over four years,” he said. “Vancouver’s share of the transit revenue from our cap-and-trade plan would mean an additional $106 million.”
Layton said that money could buy 62 SkyTrain cars or 360 hybrid buses.
“It wouldn’t raise the price of transit … and would improve service.”
Don Davies, Vancouver Kingsway candidate, said people in his riding are dependent on transit.
“(Many) don’t have cars or can’t afford to use them with the high price of gas,” Layton added. “They have long wait times and people are left worried about getting to work on time. It’s just not right.”
