MacKinnon, Drouin on winning team at Team Canada intrasquad

Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin were on the victorious squad as Team Red edged Team White 3-1 in a Canadian junior intrasquad game in Calgary on Tuesday night.

Phillip Danault of the Victoriaville Tigres, Frank Corrado of the Sudbury Wolves and Edmonton Oilers’ forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, into an empty net, scored for Team Red, which outshot Team White 26-23.

Hunter Shinkaruk of the Medicine Hat Tigers had the goal for Team White.

MacKinnon and Drouin are the two youngest players at the camp, with both born in 1995. The Canadian Press reports MacKinnon "played fearlessly and drew a reaction from the seats with his speed and quick moves around the net."

“As the game went on I felt more comfortable," MacKinnon told reporters after the game. "I think we had a good game overall. Obviously the offence wasn’t there early on but we got it done in the end and I’m glad we won.”

On Wednesday afternoon, the Canadian junior hopefuls will face a CIS all-star team, with the first round of cuts expected following the game.

The 23-man roster is scheduled to be finalized end of day Thursday.
